I served as the 12th and 13th Presidents of the National Association for Korean Schools – Mid-Atlantic Chapter (NAKS-MAC) from 2022 to 2026.

The National Association for Korean Schools -Mid-Atlantic Chapter(NAKS-MAC) was established in 2000 and celebrates its 26th anniversary in 2026. The chapter serves Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Southern New Jersey and currently represents 28 affiliated Korean schools.

Website: https://naksmac.org/

The chapter is dedicated to advancing Korean language education and enhancing the professional development of teachers through various educational programs, including teacher training workshops, academic conferences, Hangul Day celebrations, Korean speech contests, and Korean cultural activities.

The National Association for Korean Schools (NAKS) is an educational organization that brings together Korean schools across the United States. It plays a vital role in promoting and preserving the Korean language, culture, history, and heritage among Korean Americans.

Above all, its most important mission is to help the next generation of Korean Americans learn the Korean language and culture, understand their heritage, and develop a strong sense of Korean identity, pride, and belonging.

Currently, the National Association for Korean Schools – Mid-Atlantic Chapter (NAKS-MAC) serves Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Southern New Jersey. The chapter consists of 28 affiliated Korean schools, approximately 200 teachers, and more than 1,000 students.

Most Korean schools operate as weekend schools, playing a vital role in educating the next generation by teaching not only the Korean language but also Korean history, culture, and heritage.

On a national level, the National Association for Korean Schools (NAKS) consists of 14 regional chapters across the United States. According to information published on the official NAKS website in 2025, approximately 700 Korean schools, 7,000 teachers, and 70,000 students are part of this nationwide educational network.

These Korean schools play an essential role in helping younger generations of Korean Americans learn the Korean language, appreciate Korean culture, preserve their Korean heritage, and develop a strong sense of Korean identity within American society.

Over the past 28 years, I have had countless rewarding experiences and moments of gratitude while serving as a Korean school teacher, vice principal, principal, regional association officer, and president.

It is a tremendous honor and a source of great pride for me as a Korean language educator to receive the Cultural Merit (Cultural Medal) for contributions to the advancement of Hangeul, as well as the Korean Language Society’s Award of Merit, in this meaningful year marking the 580th anniversary of the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum.

I believe these honors would not have been possible without the dedication and collaboration of my fellow teachers, association officers, and parents who have supported and worked alongside me throughout the years.

I am deeply grateful to share these honors with all of them, and I remain committed to educating future generations in the Korean language and promoting Korean culture.

The most rewarding moments were seeing students grow as they learned the Korean language and culture, and watching them develop a sense of pride in their Korean heritage and identity.

On the other hand, the greatest challenges were the shortage of qualified teachers and the lack of financial support needed to operate Korean schools.

Despite these difficulties, the joy of witnessing my students’ growth and achievements has always been the driving force that helped me overcome those challenges.

I believe that for second- and third-generation Korean American youth growing up in the United States, learning the Korean language goes far beyond simply acquiring language skills. It is an important journey of understanding their roots and developing a strong sense of Korean identity.

By learning not only the Korean language but also Korean history and culture, students can develop pride in their heritage and grow into confident and proud Korean Americans who make meaningful contributions to American society. I believe this is one of the most important roles of Korean language education.

For me, it is both a great privilege and a personal mission to be part of this educational journey, helping future generations preserve their Korean identity while growing into responsible and contributing members of American society.

Since establishing an adult Korean language program in 2016, I have personally witnessed a growing interest in learning Korean among Americans, largely influenced by the global popularity of Korean culture, including K-Pop and K-dramas.

Students from diverse backgrounds, including Korean Americans, non-Korean Americans, Korean adoptees, and multicultural families, have shown increasing interest in learning the Korean language and exploring Korean culture.

One of the most rewarding experiences was organizing a Korean speech contest for

non-native Korean speakers. Watching participants confidently express their thoughts in Korean after preparing and practicing so diligently gave me a tremendous sense of pride and fulfillment as a Korean language educator.

I believe that Korean is now becoming much more than just a foreign language. It is a meaningful bridge that connects people from different cultures and backgrounds, fostering greater understanding, communication, and cultural appreciation.

I believe it is important for students not only to learn the Korean language but also to experience Korean history and culture firsthand through a variety of hands-on activities.

Programs such as the “My Dream Speech Contest,” “Hangeul Day Writing Contest,” and “Hangeul Design Contest” provide valuable opportunities for students to improve their Korean language skills while building confidence and pride in their heritage.

Cultural activities such as Sebae (traditional New Year’s bowing) and Hanbok fashion shows also help students naturally connect with and appreciate Korean traditions.

Through organizing these programs, I have witnessed students’ enthusiasm, strong interest, and active participation. These experiences have reinforced my belief that combining Korean language education with history and cultural education helps students develop a deeper understanding of their roots, strengthen their Korean identity, and take pride in their heritage.

I am grateful that the Korean government has been gradually expanding its support for Korean language education in overseas Korean communities. However, continued support is essential to ensure the stability and long-term sustainability of Korean heritage schools abroad.

In particular, I believe it is important to provide Korean language textbooks, educational resources on Korean history and culture, and expanded professional development and training opportunities for teachers.

With stronger and more consistent support, Korean heritage school teachers will be better equipped to provide quality education in a more supportive learning environment. Ultimately, these efforts will greatly benefit future generations by helping them learn the Korean language, appreciate Korean culture, and maintain a strong connection to their Korean heritage.

My family immigrated to the United States in 1985. My journey in Korean language education began the year my eldest daughter was born, when I volunteered as a Sunday school teacher at the church I attended. During that time, I began teaching children the Korean language and culture.

At first, I taught a small group of students using both Korean and English. What started as a simple volunteer opportunity gradually grew into a lifelong passion for Korean language education. Over the years, I continued serving the next generation through various roles at Korean heritage schools, including teacher, vice principal, and principal.

As a parent, I also made a conscious effort to ensure that my own children learned Korean and stayed connected to their Korean cultural heritage.

Through these personal and professional experiences, I came to believe that Korean language education is about much more than teaching a language. It is about preserving our roots, strengthening our cultural identity, and passing our heritage on to future generations.

When I was attending high school and college in the United States, most Americans knew very little about Korea, and there was limited interest in Korean culture.

However, by the time my own children were born and began attending school in the United States, things had started to change. Their friends were becoming increasingly interested in Korea and Korean culture, and I was proud to see my children embrace their identity as Korean Americans with confidence and pride.

Another meaningful experience was watching my children make an effort to communicate with their grandmother in Korean. It helped me realize that the Korean language is much more than a means of communication. It is a precious bridge that connects families and generations while preserving our cultural roots and identity.

These personal experiences inspired me to help not only my own children but also future generations of Korean Americans learn the Korean language, appreciate their cultural heritage, and take pride in their roots.

This realization became one of the most important motivations behind my lifelong dedication to Korean language and cultural education.

If I were to describe my life as a Korean immigrant and educator in three words, they would be “Proud, Dedicated, and Purpose-Driven.”

First, a proud life. I am proud to have preserved my Korean identity as an immigrant and to have had the opportunity to pass on the Korean language and culture to future generations.

Second, a dedicated life. For nearly 30 years, I have devoted myself to Korean language and cultural education, helping young students learn, grow, and develop a deeper appreciation for their Korean heritage.

Third, a purpose-driven life. I believe that preserving and passing on the Korean language and culture abroad is a modern-day form of the Korean independence movement—a meaningful mission to protect our cultural heritage and identity for future generations.

With this strong sense of purpose and responsibility, I hope to continue dedicating myself to Korean language education and inspiring future generations to take pride in their Korean roots.

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation and encouragement to Korean communities around the world who are dedicated to preserving the Korean language and culture, as well as to everyone who is learning Korean.

Hangeul is much more than a writing system. It is a precious cultural treasure that connects us to our heritage, identity, and traditions. Today, the Korean language continues to reach beyond borders, becoming a source of pride and a meaningful bridge connecting people and cultures around the world.

I sincerely hope that everyone who loves and learns Korean will continue this journey with pride, passion, and confidence.

To all Korean language educators and learners around the world, thank you for your dedication and commitment. Keep learning, keep inspiring, and continue sharing the beauty of the Korean language and culture with the world!
